I am trying to learn a bit about x86 assembly and Vim didn't have a syntax highlighter installed for it.

I downloaded this One from github and placed it in the ~/.vim/after/syntax/ directory but this didn't work for me. I needed to enter the command set syntax=nasm every time I open a new nasm file

Syntax files rely on the filetype mechanism to set the value of syntax appropriately (done automatically when the filetype is set). Perhaps :help ftdetect? – D. Ben Knoble Mar 8 at 13:02
