When pasting a huge text (10,000 lines, around 500KB) in vim (yes, I'm using insert mode and :set paste), I lose random characters every few lines. I thought it could be a plugin, so I tried starting vim with vim -u NONE but it still happens. (When pasting I see the -- INSERT (paste) -- so I'm pretty sure I'm in insert mode). The only pattern I could find in the missing characters is that they are always in pairs (that is, two consecutive chars disappear)

OS: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS. Inside gnuscreen with default config (not sure if it changes anything)

Terminal: gnome-terimnal

EDIT1:

  • I'm pasting regular ASCII text. Most of the time missing chars are regular ASCII chars, but sometimes "\n" is missing and two lines get converted into one. I can spot de missing characters directly on vim, but I also see them when doing diff.
  • I wasn't able to paste using "+p because I didn't have clipboard feature. I installed it, and after pasting with "+p I confirm it does not happen (I will obviously start using "+p now). Still, using Ctrl+V still lose characters.
  • Here is a sample of the text I'm pasting. And here is the diff original.txt pasted.txt
  • Given that I have installed all vim features, vim --version currently looks like this:

  • Welcome to Vi and Vim! – filbranden May 29 at 18:27
  • Does the paste operation succeed if you paste to cat >/tmp/file.txt or similar? Are you pasting binary data and are the characters missing control characters? Do you spot the missing characters in Vim itself or only after you write the file to diff (from a diff or similar tool?) – filbranden May 29 at 19:30
  • As Filipe asked it would be interesting which characters exactly are lost. And more important: What characters are around the lost characters? Does it work as expected when you use "+p (which is faster anyway)? – Ralf May 30 at 6:17
