2018 Moderator Election

On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

Hello vi.se! I'm DJ, and I would be honored to be a moderator on this site that I love so much.

I've been regularly using Stack Exchange for right around 4 years, and this site for around 3. Most of my SE contribution has been related to vim in one way or another. Even on the site I spend most of my time on, code-golf, most of my answers have been written using vim in ways it was never intended to be used, which is a bit unorthodox, but I find incredibly satisfying.

I also have spent a lot of time using moderation tools. I'm a member of Charcoal, an organization that hunts down spam across the network, and currently an elected moderator on code-golf.

I think that I would make a good moderator on this site since I have a passion for both SE and vim, and I've been around on this site for a while, answering, reviewing, and editing to keep the site high-quality. I'm also very active in chat, which means it would always be easy to get a hold of me.

If you have any questions or concerns for me, feel free to bring them up, either here or in chat! I'd be happy to hear and address them. --DJ

  • More activity on this site and mod experience already. I suspect if you're still willing at the end of the process, I'll withdraw and vote for you :-) – user579 Sep 12 '18 at 4:10

I'm Caleb. I have used vi based editors in nearly all their flavors for everything (this nomination being composed in Neovim-GTK via GhostText) for 25+ years. My beard is only flecked with grey and my wife makes me trim it short, but when it comes to editor habits I'm a classic Unix grey-beard. My RC files are available for review.

As for moderation experience, I started out as a pro-tem then was elected as a moderator on Christianity and am also a pro-tem on Hermeneutics. My history on those sites should speak to how I deal with conflict and contribute to the inner workings of SE sites.

I have not been particularly active on this site but I have been consistent with moderator duties through the years on other sites even during seasons when I didn't have time to contribute content. I think I'll be able to handle contributing to moderation needs here.

I will be traveling internationally and unreachable during this election cycle, but I will be back. If you'd like to have me on the other end of your flags then I'm game!

  • Candidate score 1/40. Wow that burns. I need some badges or something. – Caleb Sep 11 '18 at 7:50
  • I'm curious as to whether you think being moderator on three separate sites will impact your available time. My thoughts are probably colored by the fact that the effort would be substantial on SO, it may not be that onerous on sites with lower volumes (one reason why I'm looking here rather than waiting for the next SO election - I doubt my other half would be impressed with the amount of time I'd have to dedicate there). – user579 Sep 17 '18 at 4:46
  • A beard plus respect for women is wise. Combined with honesty (rc-files), it is noble! – Volker Siegel Sep 17 '18 at 15:09

My name is ILikeTurtles and I would like to nominate myself for the Vi and Vim moderator position because I would bring a positive attitude to the table and work towards improving the community. I feel that my professionalism and respect for others could bring people joy and I care about how this sub functions because I have a passion for Vim and Vi. A moderator is worthless without a community and my only goal is to support you all in making Vi and Vim the best exchange it could be by supporting you all with all the tools afforded me.

Vote! For knowledge! For community! For ILikeTurtles!

  • but do you like turtles? – Seth Sep 10 '18 at 22:36
  • I like turtles (1) as a pet; or (2) as a dinner meal? There's a rather vast difference :-) – user579 Sep 11 '18 at 7:56
  • That's a pretty generic statement. No candidate's going to say they're going to bring a negative attitude or are unprofessional or have no respect for others or they hate vi/vim or they're going to make the exchange the worst it could be, so saying the opposite doesn't add anything. Also, my reputation's actually higher than yours (ok, by two points :-) ) and I'd never consider myself ready to moderate. You may make a great moderator, but you need to give concrete reasons why that's so. – blm Sep 11 '18 at 18:34
  • @Seth I might like turtles the most on Stack. – ILikeTurtles Sep 12 '18 at 19:03
  • @paxdiablo As a pet. Never eat turtles. They are good. – ILikeTurtles Sep 12 '18 at 19:03
  • @blm Is any one REALLY ready to moderate? No. I want to moderate and that is 3/4 of the battle. The other quarter is making sure that I do my best to help the community. I have intent and willingness and that is all I can offer and if it isn't good enough in your opinion then you should vote for someone you think will do a good job. – ILikeTurtles Sep 12 '18 at 19:06

This election is complete.
